circular, durable & eco-friendly: a hanger reinvented

( r e )consider the humble hanger....

It’s something we all use, every day, yet rarely give a second thought.

But what if this simple object, hiding in our closets, quietly doing its job, could be reimagined to do more

What if it could clean up our oceans, reduce waste, support small businesses, and still be the strongest, most beautiful hanger you’ve ever owned?

That’s the vision behind our brand: transforming ocean plastic into thoughtfully designed hangers that don’t just hang clothes, they carry impact.

At the heart of ( r e )x lies a deep commitment to sustainability, design, and social impact.

Our journey begins on the beaches of South Africa and ends in your closet—threaded together by recycled plastic, reimagined design, and a mission bigger than convenience or cost.

Reducing waste, reusing materials, and recycling plastic.

why most hangers aren’t eco-friendly (even the ones that say they are)

the recycled plastic content breakdown of our red hanger

This graph breaks down the recycled plastic content that makes up our red hanger. 100% of our hangers come from recycled content including beach, ocean bound, ocean plastic, and post-consumer plastic.

Before we dive into what makes our hangers special, let’s talk about plastic.

Plastic is one of the most durable materials humanity has ever created, and yet it's often used to make disposable products.

  • it's been found in the deepest parts of the ocean
  • in the stomachs of wildlife
  • and on beaches around the world, including those thousands of miles from where it was originally discarded.

Despite this crisis, most hangers sold today (those $5 packs of 50 from big box stores) are made from virgin plastic (made from brand new fossil fuels).

And here's the kicker: they are almost never recycled.

Why? It’s not that hangers can’t be recycled. It’s that doing so isn’t profitable.

Recycling infrastructure often isn't set up to handle small, oddly shaped items that used multiple types of plastic — like hangers.

Plus, why would a company want to make a product that lasts when they can make a cheap one that constantly needs replacing?

We said no to that model.
Then we designed a better hanger—and a name to go with it.

  • re → as in to do something again
  • ( r e )x → as in infinity

Put it together like a little math equation: ( r e )ˣ

And it becomes a nod to our mission — to create something that can be renewed, reused, and reimagined, infinitely.

Can you tell our founder is an artist?

how we designed an eco-friendlier hanger

a picture of our stronger eco-friendly hanger with illustrated text pointing out the ways we improved it's design and how we made it stronger than ever and built to last: a reinforced bridge, doubled vertical strength, reinforced hook, and stronger fish hooks to hold clothes.

Let’s be real: no one ever thought the best winter coat or clothing hangers would be made from ocean plastic.

But that’s exactly what we set out to do.

And we didn’t just redesign a hanger. We re-engineered it.

Purposefully.

Most hangers on the market are cheap, break easily, and end up in landfills.

We weren’t interested in that. We wanted to create a good clothes hanger that was strong, sustainable, and not to mention, good-looking.

here are the specific things we did to create a hanger that’s built to last:

  1. A Reinforced Bridge: This is the weak spot of most hangers, the place where they snap in two under pressure. We built ours with a solid, reinforced bridge to handle real life. Think oversized coats, layers of sweaters, or the five garments you’re trying to hang at once before company comes over.

  2. A 50% Thicker Hook: The hook is where the strength starts. Ours is beefed up to carry heavy loads without warping, bending, or breaking. You’ll feel the difference the moment you hang something up.

  3. Integrated Garment Hooks: Delicate straps, tank tops, bras, swimsuits—whatever you’re hanging, we made sure it stays put. No more sliding, snagging, or falling to the floor.

  4. A Stronger, Wider Pant Bar: Double the vertical strength and a wider surface area means your pants hang flat, stay crisp, and won’t bow out the hanger over time.

Yes, we obsessed over every detail.

Yes, we purposefully designed the entire thing.

Because we believe eco-friendly hangers shouldn’t just be good for the planet—they should be good for your life.

when it comes to eco-friendly living, plastic gets a bad rap

Rightfully so in many cases.

It’s durable, yes—but it can only be recycled about seven times before it loses its integrity.

After that, it becomes mushy, soft, unusable. That’s why we’re flooded with single-use plastics and synthetic fast fashion that never make it to a second life.

But our green hangers (green as in eco-friendly and color) aren’t meant to be recycled seven times.

They’re meant to avoid that fate altogether.

  • our sustainable hangers are strong
  • they're super long-lasting
  • and they're made to stick around (your closet, not in a landfill)

Yes, our hangers cost more than $5 for a pack of 50, but with their thoughtful design, you’ll probably forget when you even bought them—because they just don’t break.

And if they do break? (Hey, accidents happen—we’ve seen what a toddler with super strength can do.) Send it back to us

We’ll break it down and turn it into a brand-new hanger. You’re never part of the problem, only the solution.

Now, let’s talk about the people who make it possible.

the partnership transforming plastic waste into eco-friendly hangers

we have 221,120 remanufactured products in parts

Here’s the magic: we don’t just design recycled plastic hangers—we clean up the ocean and help provide jobs while doing it.

We’re proud to partner with Ocean Plastic Technologies, a South African organization turning environmental cleanup into a circular, job-creating, life-changing operation.

Local community members are supported in starting small businesses focused on collecting plastic waste from beaches and waterways. The collected materials (think bottle caps, shampoo bottles, broken crates, etc.) are sorted, melted, and molded into our hangers.

This isn’t just recycling. It’s regeneration.

It’s about creating environmentally friendly products and providing economic opportunities.

It’s about teaching people how to be part of the solution and paying them for doing it.

The result?

  • cleaner shores.
  • stronger communities.
  • a supply chain with soul.

If you're looking for ways to be sustainable in everyday life, this is it

Every eco living habit starts with simple choices—and this one’s hanging right in front of you!

small humans, big impact

We didn’t forget about little ones!

Our children’s hangers are designed with the same durability and features, just in a smaller, more adorable size. They’re perfect for baby clothes, toddler outfits, and preschooler fashion statements.

But they’re also surprisingly versatile.

Many people love using them for tank tops, camis, and petite clothing that doesn’t quite fit full-sized hangers.

And because kids grow up (faster than any of us are ready for), we created a return-for-recycle system: Send back your kids' hangers when you’re ready to size up, and you’ll receive a $5 credit toward an adult hanger set.

It’s one more way we’re closing the loop—and proving that sustainable hangers can grow right along with your family.

p.s. if you’re not sure how to shop for new, sustainable parents, we’ve got a blog on that. 🤩

a hanger that holds more than clothes

( r e )x incredibly cool female founder Paulina Quintana at a sustainable award show

At the end of the day, yes…it’s a hanger. But it’s also a symbol of something bigger.

It’s a tool for change.

It’s ocean plastic, rescued and reborn.

It’s a product of human hands and heart, designed not just to function, but to matter

It’s a reminder that the things we use every day, those small, unnoticed, forgotten items, can be completely reimagined.

These aren’t just good clothes hangers. They’re better hangers. Stronger, smarter, more sustainable. And every single one makes a difference.

Let’s hold up the world, one piece of clothing (and one piece of plastic) at a time.
